Chad didn’t have any idea what time it was when Brian

dropped him off at his car. He hadn’t looked at his phone since

his last text to Sonny.

“Thanks for all you did tonight, Brian.”

He smiled and offered a hand. “Don’t worry. I know I’ll see

you around. I think Dex is officially in hero worship right now.”

Chad returned both the smile and the hand shake. “Shows

what he knows. I was just impulsive and probably would have

gotten both our asses kicked if you hadn’t been there.”

Brian ignored him. “Drive carefully.” He waited for Chad to

get in his car before he left Chad behind. Sweeping the parking

lot with a searching gaze, he noted the asshole’s truck was still

there; the clothing tatters weren’t. He’d caught a little of their

conversation as he’d neared to return to the cubicle, waiting

patiently for them to finish before intruding again.

Pressing charges had only been the beginning for the man

who’d attacked Dex. He knew Brian was returning to the hospital

to spring the young man. Chad had traded phone numbers with

both of them, promising to call tomorrow and check in on him.

He’d also asked Dex if he was sure about being left in Brian’s

care, rather than Chad’s, not that he knew either of them that

well. Dex’s answer kind of surprised Chad.

“He showed me his business card,” Dex replied quietly, his

voice still the soft, willowy sound Chad had first heard, though

there was a definite tremble in it now. “He’s a self-defense and

judo instructor and teaches Intro to Criminal Justice at the junior

college.”

“Wow.”

Dex’s eyes broadened in mutual surprise. “I know. He doesn’t

look like any teacher I’ve ever had.”

That wasn’t quite what Chad had been thinking, but he let it

go. If Dex was comfortable with Brian, he wasn’t going to make

him doubt his decision, but it was no wonder the man had the

body of an Adonis. He’d caught a martial arts fight once or twice.

Those men did not play around.

Watching the traffic signals ahead, he couldn’t believe the way

his night had gone. He’d gone out tonight with the intent of

finding someone to take his mind off Sonny.

Instead, he’d made two new friends and had found himself

practically speeding in the aftermath of his night to get home to

the very man he’d tried to push out of his thoughts. He’d think

about what he had to do to stay sane tomorrow. Right now, he

just needed his friend. He needed to be home.

Pulling into the drive, he noted the living room light was on.

He wondered if that meant Sonny had indeed stayed up, or if

he’d left it on for him.

He had his answer when his foot hit the last step. The front

door swung open. “You sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine,” Chad replied as he cleared the doorway. The door

closed just as easily. Then his entire world flipped.

Sonny reached for a hand and yanked him close.

Then he kissed Chad.

Chad stumbled the last few inches, blinking, uncomprehending.

He finally managed to push Sonny clear.

“Sonny? What are you doing?”

“Going insane with worry for you.” Warm hands held Chad’s

jaw, held him immobile. Brown eyes searched every viewable inch

of Chad.
